Contractor shares secret to growing business: Craftsmanship, honesty and communication

David Farra says that he went all in on his new business and credits the success on “craftsmanship, honesty and communication.”

David Farra has dreamed of owning a construction company since he was a kid. His dream is now a reality thanks to the help coach Blake Fleegle and Startup Alleghenies have provided.

When Farra decided to start D Farra Contracting and Excavating, he says that getting coaching from a fellow business owner — Startup Alleghenies Coach Blake Fleegle — made a huge difference. “Blake helped me ensure I had everything set up properly from the beginning,” Farra said. “Being a business owner, he was able to provide real insight and help me understand the business aspects.”

I am constantly seeking motivation and ways to improve my company, myself, my team and the work we can do. When I get a text from a client or read a review, and they rave about how beautifully the job was completed, it keeps me going.

A lot of factors come into play when starting a new business, but that didn’t stop Farra. “I just pulled the trigger and did it,” he laughed. “They say ‘scared money doesn’t make money,’ so I went all in, and our craftsmanship, honesty and communication set us apart from others in the industry.”

“Dave hustles. He doesn’t do anything halfway,” Fleegle said, “and it shows in his work. He is bringing a new level of professionalism to the construction industry.”

“I bring the same level of quality and consideration to every job, no matter how big or small,” Farra added. “We are upfront and honest with every customer, and to date, there hasn’t been a single job that we turned down.”

Farra says that he hasn’t turned down a single job as he builds his business. “When our clients rave about how beautifully the job was completed, it keeps me going.”

In a small town, word-of-mouth recommendations have boosted his business. “Our customer base has grown. We have a lot of people talking about our company,” he shared. “I want to beat out the other contractors. I am constantly seeking motivation and ways to improve my company, myself, my team and the work we can do.”

Being a business owner is tough, and all successful entrepreneurs have that internal why that keeps them pushing forward. “It’s my customers,” Farra said. “When I get a text from a client or read a review, and they rave about how beautifully the job was completed, it keeps me going.”

Don’t let someone else control your dreams. Follow your passion, and you’ll be unstoppable.

Farra plans to keep growing his team and the size of the projects. “We are working on some bigger contracts now, and we will always seek growth and improvement,” he said.

His family pushed him and supported him to follow his dreams. He shared this advice for others who have a dream: “Don’t let someone else control your dreams. Follow your passion, and you’ll be unstoppable.”
