Blossoming dreams: Somerset business is nurturing a passion into prosperity

In Alleghenies Marketplace, Entrepreneurship, Somerset County

Logan Byers launched her business to fulfill her dream of freedom to stay home with her son.

Nestled in the heart of The Alleghenies, Somerset County is home to a business that has taken root, spreading its love for plants and holistic products to the community. Byers Botanicals, founded by Logan Byers, is not just a company; it’s a passion-driven venture.

Like the plants she loves, Byers’ journey began with a seed of necessity and a desire for work-life balance. As a personal trainer and spin enthusiast, she wanted to find a way to stay close to her child while pursuing her passions. Then, a creative idea blossomed, suggested by her tattoo artist: a plant business that would allow her to nurture her family and her dreams.

Nurturing roots

The absence of a plant store nearby in Somerset provided the perfect opportunity to fill the gap in the market. The guidance and support from Startup Alleghenies were the sunlight and water that helped grow this business idea. “I met with my coach Matt Reckner at least once weekly for three months,” Byers shared. “Without the help of Startup Alleghenies, I don’t think this would have happened… just getting the business plan together was overwhelming.”

I love rare plants… I knew this love could be shared with this community, bringing joy and holistic solutions to their lives.

“Matt helped guide me through everything, truly from A to Z. I wouldn’t have even known where to start without his help,” she continued.

“Logan is bringing something new to the area,” Reckner said. “She is taking love and passion deeply rooted in her and sharing it with the community. Together we’ve established the foundation of her business to set her up for success.”

Various potted plants can be purchased with a complete are guide to help nurture each plant successfully.

Growing with love

Byers’ childhood memories of her grandfather’s lush garden and her mother’s collection of 150 houseplants fueled her love for plants. “I love rare plants and getting new and different plants,” she said. “I knew this love could be shared with this community, bringing joy and holistic solutions to their lives.”

I knew my customers needed guidance on caring for their plants. I created personalized care guides packed with useful information. It’s all simple and right there for them.

Byers’ personal experiences led her to discover holistic solutions for hair loss, which ultimately paved the way for her to create a range of organic and chemical-free products. “I was struggling with postpartum hair loss and made a mist using plants I had grown,” she shared. “It made a significant difference, and my friend suggested I share it with others. The chemical-free bug spray I created also became a hit, followed by a soothing burn spray.”

“There isn’t anything like this here, which makes it ideal,” Byers shared. “We aren’t a store. You either catch us at a show, special order or message me. There is no guarantee that a specific plant will be available. I keep it random and a price point that is competitive.”

Cultivating knowledge

Byers Botanicals has a unique approach. It’s not just going to a big box store and finding something that looks pretty. It comes with knowledge and advice to find the right plant that fits each customer’s lifestyle. “I knew my customers needed more than just products—they needed guidance on caring for their plants,” Byers explained. “I created personalized care guides packed with useful information, and this saves my customers from sifting through the noise online. It’s all simple and right there for them.”

Handcrafted, natural products emphasize the beauty and simplicity that can be found in nature, Byers combines ingredients to produce high-quality products.

Fruits of success

The vast amount of support and success that she has seen so far has surpassed her expectations. “Every product, service and repotting offering has received overwhelming support from the community,” Byers said. “I hope to eventually have a dedicated space for my business, a nurturing haven where I can host classes and gatherings to share my love for plants with others.”

I met with my coach at least once weekly for three months. Without the help of Startup Alleghenies, I don’t think this would have happened.

To aspiring entrepreneurs, Byers’ story offers an empowering lesson—keep pushing, and your passion will bloom. “Just keep pushing and looking for what complements your business… even if you are scared, you will never know if you don’t try,” she said. “If you need it, other people do as well; if you love it, people will eventually become your customers.”

Byers Botanicals is more than just a plant business; it’s a story of dreams nurtured, passions pursued, and communities flourishing.
